DETLINES – THE DESIGN SYSTEM FOR ALL ZDF PRODUCTS

DetLines is the central design system for all ZDF products, ensuring that users enjoy a consistent user experience across all delivery platforms. The entire product landscape is always taken into account: web, mobile apps (iOS, Android), and big screen (TV-HTML, Android TV and TVOS). With DetLines, new features and applications can be implemented efficiently, consistently and across platforms, whilst providing the team with a unified understanding of tokens, components and patterns.

Goal

The design system is based on the Atomic Design approach, meaning that, in addition to the ZDF streaming portal, further products for ZDF can be developed efficiently at any time. A clear set of guidelines assists in the use of components and patterns across all delivery channels and platforms. This helps to avoid special cases, facilitates coordination, improves collaboration and speeds up QA processes. All components and patterns have been developed with a focus on accessibility, ensuring inclusive use. By taking into account user studies, personas and user journeys, DetLines helps ensure that new products are always developed from the users’ perspective.

Challenge

The large number of different platforms (web, mobile apps, big-screen broadcasts) and the requirements and expectations placed on a streaming portal called for a thorough understanding of systemisation and a deep knowledge of the technical challenges involved.

The new ZDF streaming portal is centred on users and their individual interests and preferences. Thanks to an improved navigation structure, users are now guided intuitively through the platform. Automated and algorithmically generated page types ensure that content is presented in a clear and organised manner.

The aim was to set entirely new standards for a modern, intuitive and inclusive streaming portal, and to provide a contemporary response to users’ growing demands through its public service personalisation strategy.

Strategically, the launch builds on key innovations from recent years: the “One ZDF for All” strategy has already significantly expanded the range of new content available for on-demand viewing. Furthermore, thanks to the collaboration within the ARD/ZDF streaming network, content from ARD and partner broadcasters can also be accessed via the ZDF streaming portal.

With in-house solutions such as its proprietary recommendation system, ZDF can also draw on extensive experience in automation and personalisation.

Due to these requirements for the new ZDF streaming portal, the old components and patterns had to be completely redesigned and, for the most part, redeveloped from scratch.

Design

Thanks to this systematisation and a newly established single source of truth, all ZDF products can now be developed and implemented in a consistent, responsive manner, with uniform accessibility.

All components and patterns are now stored only once in Figma and in the frontend, and are referenced elsewhere. Through the constant comparison with the set design principles a uniform design and image language as well as user experience can be guaranteed across all platforms. This approach helps to speed up decision-making processes regarding new components and patterns.

The new UI design stands out for its clarity, feels instantly fresh and is visually striking. Dynamic inspiration is the driving force behind the UI design and conveys the idea of personalised, endlessly engaging content on a visual level.

In all decisions regarding the new UI, ease of use, clarity and intuitiveness are the key factors driving our decision-making. Our aim is for users to find their way around quickly and always discover content that suits them and appeals to them. In doing so, we want to inspire them in the moment and create a ‘wow’ effect.

Primary focus on dark mode

Taking into account the ‘lean-back’ approach and the most common usage scenarios, we see the primary focus as being on dark mode.

A consistent user experience across all platforms and products

Our UI relies on cross-platform and cross-product components. We aim to deliver a consistent UX across all our platforms (where technically feasible) and products, without appearing overly uniform. Naturally, we take into account the specific operational requirements of individual touchpoints.

Design approach

DetLines is aimed at all product owners, UX and UI designers, front-end developers and the QA team. Our focus on this target audience has been a key factor in shaping the structure and architecture of DetLines.

In parallel with the UI development of the new ZDF streaming portal and the associated concept, the DetLines design system was completely overhauled. Our team spent over two years developing the current version of DetLines. This design system consists of a Foundation Library, an Icon Library, a Core Library and the respective Product Libraries in Figma, the accompanying documentation in Zeroheight, and the front-end libraries and documentation in Storybook for the front-end.

In this context, Zeroheight acts as the central interface between UI/UX design and front-end development, as it provides a direct link to Figma libraries and can integrate Storybook. The library demonstrates the behaviour, characteristics and, using live/mock data, an accurate representation of the respective components and patterns. With the new DetLines Core Library, new products for ZDF – alongside the new ZDF streaming portal – can be designed and further developed efficiently and purposefully. With the product library for the ZDF streaming portal, the product itself gains a recipe library that contains all product-specific components and patterns, whilst referencing ZDF’s core components and core patterns.

A common language

Across all departments and disciplines (PO, UI, UX, Dev, QA, etc.), we were able to agree on a consistent terminology for tokens, components, patterns, types and states. This has improved coordination and communication and helped prevent misunderstandings.

The current shift towards a ZDF streaming portal has led to fundamental changes in functional patterns. These have been incorporated into the new DetLines and form the core of the user experience.

The new design language and the styles developed were intended to meet the objectives and requirements set for a modern streaming portal.

Processes for further development

At the same time, we have been working on processes to structure the collaboration between the product teams and the Design System team. How are new components introduced? Who decides on components? How do they reach all stakeholders, and how can we ensure that all products are designed using the core components? The aim is to ensure that components and patterns are not developed twice. As the Design System team, we actively support the product teams in their work, implement requirements quickly and efficiently, provide onboarding, and offer assistance and guidelines for implementation and use, so that DetLines remains an integral part of ZDF.

Accessibility

During the entire process, all patterns were constantly checked from the point of view of accessibility. The results of BITV tests enabled targeted improvements to be made and inclusive use and participation to be ensured. New components and patterns must always comply with the BITV 2.0 accessibility requirements. DetLines has accelerated these processes in all trades and allows us to react more effectively and efficiently to changes in user needs.

With the help of extensive additional programme data, content becomes more accessible, better categorised and clearly structured. Technical advancements, combined with a contemporary design and user-friendly content presentation, create an intuitive user experience for all target groups.

Team

The ZDF DetLines Design System was developed using an interdisciplinary approach:

Product owners have provided feedback from the user’s perspective, managed the team, coordinated between product teams and overseen new developments.

DESIGN

A team of UI/UX designers created a Foundation Library, an Icon Library and a Core Library for all of ZDF’s digital products, as well as a Product Library for the new ZDF streaming portal, in Figma. For each component and pattern, all six display options—including types and states—are immediately accessible, making them intuitive and quick to use for users.

Development

The front-end teams for each platform created their own libraries for the core components and the product-specific components and patterns – with a focus on reusability, testability and documentation for the front-end team.

A Design System Architect defined the overall structure and architecture of the components and patterns for the Core Library, Recipe Library and the interaction between the various libraries in Figma.

Documentation

A team documented tokens, components and patterns in Zeroheight, set up the integration with Figma and incorporated Storybook.

A dedicated design system team is responsible for maintaining, quality-assuring and expanding the system.

The AI editorial assistant for better texts and optimized content workflows

MISSION

TASK

The idea was to develop a digital product that could automate content production processes in publishing houses, media companies and editorial offices thanks to the use of large language models. When creating texts, this product should preserve the style, tonality and quality of the sender through good prompt engineering and be tailored to the target group and target channels.

Challenge

Content production in large publishing and media houses, for example, is faced with the challenge of constantly producing high-quality texts that meet the specific requirements and style of the respective publication. The texts not only have to be produced quickly, but also in large quantities and distributed to the various target groups. Traditionally, this requires a lot of time and resources, as each text has to be created, checked and optimized individually. In addition, the process is often inconsistent, as different editors apply different styles and quality standards.

GOAL

We set ourselves the goal of developing a tool that could standardize and automate this process while maintaining high quality standards. The aim was to create a product that uses the latest technological innovations and gives prompt engineers the opportunity to create prompts and prompt chains to make them available internally to their own editors – always in the style and tone of the company, always tailored to the target group and channels.

APPROACH

UX AND UI-DESIGN

By means of user research, wireframing, design processes, prototyping, the development of user stories and user journeys, the implementation of UX tests and surveys of beta users, a tool was developed that can already be used in large editorial offices.

Together in a large team from the areas of UX design, UI design, backend, frontend, QA and specialists from the fields of computational linguistics, natural language processing and machine learning, a product was developed that includes the following functions and features:

CHOICE OF THE LLM

Various large language models, such as those from OpenAI, are used to completely automate text creation and rewriting for the various target channels of texts.

INTUITIVE USER INTERFACE

A user-friendly interface design ensures that the product is easy and intuitive to use. Regular surveys and interviews with users help to adapt the product to changing needs. The original text can be compared with the generated output at any time.

CUSTOMIZED PROMPTS

Prompt engineers can quickly and efficiently create customized, company-specific prompts and prompt chains, categorize them, version them and manage them in their own library. This means that the prompts and prompt chains are always available to editors for their own work.

API

Rewrite can be integrated into content workflows and editorial systems via API. Repetitive creation processes can be automated and the style and quality of texts can be standardized.

SEO AND SOCIAL MEDIA OPTIMIZATION

The generated texts can be optimized for search engines and social media.

LANGUAGES

Regardless of the language in which the source text is available, it can be translated into all common languages. Cultural nuances are taken into account.

CITATION PRESERVATION

Original quotations can be retained on request. If the source text contains original quotations or passages that need to be copied one-to-one into the final text, these can be retained even after rewriting.

TEXT LENGTHS ACCORDING TO REQUEST

Exact text lengths can be defined, allowing source texts to be shortened or stretched as required.

CHAT-HISTORY

The individual chats are saved automatically and can be called up again at any time.

SUMMARY

With the new digital product AI Content Assistant rewrite from retresco, texts can be rewritten, adapted and output in the style, quality and tonality of the sender in a completely automated process thanks to the use of large language models and prompt engineering.

With content.audi, media such as images, videos, sounds, snippets and much more can be found, added to collections, managed and further processed by global agencies.

Challenge

Agencies work for Audi worldwide, regularly developing, managing and rolling out eye-catching campaigns. Audi clips are created and distributed for TV, social media and web presences. The assets, i.e. images, audio files, videos and documents, had to be made available and accessible as efficiently and quickly as possible.

Solution

In various user interviews, we learnt about the needs and challenges faced by agencies working for Audi worldwide when selecting or searching for individual image, video and audio assets.
The necessary functions and user stories were defined by analysing benchmarks and closely observing which tools and software the target group works with and how they integrate as perfectly as possible into their day-to-day work.
Prototypes and UX tests helped us to develop the service to be even more intuitive and user-friendly.

Results

Users can now create their own collections, share them with colleagues and collaborate on them. A rights management system ensures it is clear who will ultimately decide which assets are selected. If licences for assets are missing, they can be requested quickly and easily. The person responsible for approval will be notified automatically and can then take the process forward.

Task

Together with the digital team of the corporate communications department of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, the task was to develop two new platforms for BER Airport – one platform for all travellers and one platform for all corporate topics. The concept and design were to be modular enough to form a design system and thus enable further products to be designed for the airport company in the future.

Challenge

Despite the passenger guidance system and all the service points, customers still experience a lack of orientation and misunderstandings about the services and processes. This poses ever new challenges for the airport staff, as many people with a wide variety of experience levels of all ages encounter a complex system. A system with a wide variety of stations and processes – from check-in options to checking in bulky baggage, searching for parking spaces, security checks, gates, boarding, baggage check-in and check-out, customs checks and much more. “Where do I go now?”, “Where do I drop off the bulky luggage?”, “How do I get to my gate?”. These and endless other questions lead to many uncertainties, challenges in passenger control and, of course, a high volume of traffic at the information desks. Especially at busy times, the passenger volume must be supported by the best possible balanced guidance system both at the airport itself and in digital form at all times to support the processes at the airport. Passengers should be able to view up-to-date, consistent data and information on flight status at all times and receive immediate assistance in the event of problems.

Partners and investors should be able to find the information they need quickly and intuitively. Journalists need reliable sources and materials for their research and want to be able to compile them quickly and easily. Neighbours and residents want to be informed about aircraft movements and current events and get in touch with contact persons. In addition, the career section was to present the company as a close employer and present the diverse jobs and development opportunities within the airport company.

PREVIOUS WEBSITE

This was both structurally and conceptually outdated and in need of UX and UI improvement due to too much nesting of content and wasted space through repetition of menu levels. Users often could not find the information they needed. One reason for this was that there was only one platform for all target groups from the traveller and corporate sectors. The user interface of the flight search function was also outdated and no longer sufficiently geared to the requirements of today’s user habits.

TWO WEBSITES

Due to the completely different target groups with different needs, we agreed early on to divide the site into two platforms: One website for all travellers to, from and about BER and one website for all corporate topics (real estate, partners, airlines, processes, careers and much more).

THE MISSION

FOR TRAVELLERS

It was already clear to us in the strategy phase that we did not want to simply be an information provider with the new platform for travellers. The new platform should be more than a mere retrieval point of generic information. We wanted to create real added value, i.e. services that help international users to concentrate fully on their journey and that respond to their needs. By always providing up-to-date information, travellers should be directly given a sense of security so that they can be relaxed on their journeys via, from and to BER. The core question and mission for our target group “travellers” was therefore:

How can we develop a digital guide that offers travellers and those around them (e.g. drop off) the best possible orientation in order to travel in a relaxed manner?

The connection between the airport building, the place where the users are and their digital device was important to us. Pictograms, the passenger guidance system, the arrangement and the type of orientation should also be reflected in the digital space. The characteristics of the airport should be digitally reflected and clearly recognisable.

FOR CORPORATE

Since partners, investors, neighbours, the press and job seekers need completely different information and services to facilitate their work, we consider these target groups separately. They are looking for well-prepared data and information and often have little time for this. The core question or mission for these target groups was therefore:

How do we manage to provide a digital platform so that interested parties can access relevant information and data/documents from FBB GmbH in an easily accessible and memorable way?

GOALS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT - DESIGN SYSTEM

Starting from the platform as the maximum expression of all possibilities, both in terms of components and technical conditions, the system should be designed in such a modular way that further pages and products can be designed and developed with it at any time. As a result, all trades were required to recognise synergies and react very flexibly to changes, while always adhering to fundamental principles and functional patterns. The biggest challenge here was flexibility, as external and technical circumstances can change quickly. Without many iteration stages in the implementation, the concept and design should be directly realisable.

APPROACH

THE RESEARCH-PHASE

Using web analytics and an extensive analysis of the largest airports and airline websites worldwide, we were able to carry out detailed elaborations of proto-personas and user journeys at an early stage, including the regular passenger surveys at Tegel and Schönefeld airports. The completely different needs of the users became clear – from barrier-free travel, travel with children, transfer travel to purely business or tourist travel. In the research phase, we applied the following methods and took additional measures:

Interviews with the areas of Corporate Communications, Terminal Management, Commercial, IT Applications, Aviation Marketing, Systems & Processes, Human Resources & Organisation, Surroundings & Diversity, Noise Control & Environment, Strategic Real Estate Management, Portfolio Management / Leasing / Own Use helped us to get to know the various areas and to identify their needs and requirements for the new platform.
A complete content audit of the previously existing website served us to capture and restructure the scope and all information.
On-site tour of BER Airport with detailed training on the special features of the airport itself (architecture, guidance systems, pictograms, inclusion of the surrounding area and much more).
Participation in the ORAT (Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer) test operation of the BER… In the process, air travel had to be simulated through concrete passenger briefings. Subsequent feedback helped BER to structure passenger processes even better.
A guided tour of the Tegel Airport premises helped us to grasp the airport processes, e.g. the responsibility of the airport, airlines as well as other partners meets the needs of the traveller. In addition to the usual processes, which can be overlooked by normal travellers, we got to know further, specialised processes.
Card sorting helped us to tailor the naming and clustering of menu levels and information even more precisely to the target groups.
Based on the regular passenger surveys and interviews, we were able to map different proto-personas and their challenges. From this, we have formulated the values and goals of the users and made these the focus of the product development.
To better understand the needs and problems of the different passengers, we have created detailed user journeys. These exemplified the challenges for the respective target groups and helped us to describe the requirements for the new website.

UX AND DESIGN PROCESS

We started with rough initial sketches, through mid-fidelity wireframes to concrete wireframes of the functional patterns and design patterns of the components, atoms, form elements and page templates. The research phase showed that over 65% of users accessed the original platform via mobile. This percentage is expected to increase in the future. This made it clear that mobile access was the focus of the development. In addition, UX tests were conducted with previously elaborated target groups. The evaluation of these tests helped us to better understand the needs of the users and to take them into account in the services.

Design principles

It was particularly important to us that international users understand the information equally, be it the pictograms, the design language, the navigation – everything should be able to be grasped quickly, especially on mobile devices. To ensure that our UI and UX adaptations and innovations actually meet the needs, we have based the development process on the following design principles for the traveller platform:

THE FLIGHT SEARCH

The flight search was one of the biggest challenges due to its complexity. In principle, airports are highly dependent on the data provided by process partners. First of all, the data had to be divided into those that are definitely available and those that can only be displayed with additional delivery by partners (in expansion stages). Based on this, the website was designed to handle the different amounts of data without any problems. After this classification, it was also clear that the data was available for at least the past three days, the current day and for the next three days. The research results allowed a direct prioritisation of the data and had also revealed that the airport page is most frequently accessed to retrieve flights taking off and landing at the airport in the near future. Accordingly, we have already taken the findings into account on the homepage: Users can now quickly and intuitively switch between approach and arrival and enter destination/arrival city, flight number or airline and, depending on the entry, the best hits are displayed directly as typeahead in order to go directly to the respective flight detail page and not be sent via the flight list.

Flight list

The flight list shows an overview of all departures or/and arrivals for a selected day. The unfiltered view is similar to the view of the flight board at the airport on site. In addition, various filter and search functions are available. Users can change the time period, select the terminal and thus further narrow down the data displayed. The list itself displays the most important data and the current status of the flight. Users can click on a flight to go directly to the flight details page.

Flight detail page

On the flight details page, users can find all the relevant data for their selected flight. With the clearly visible flight number, users can immediately check whether it is the flight they are looking for. The codeshares (other flight numbers under which this flight takes place) can be called up below. On the flight details page, the flight can be remembered quickly and easily via a toggle (described in more detail later). The illustration of a plane between the departure and destination airports, including the corresponding IATA codes, makes it immediately clear whether it is a departure from BER or an arrival at BER and what the current status of the flight is.

Departure from BER

Information on the date, time, terminal, boarding time, flight duration, check-in, gates and a map are directly visible when calling up the flight details page for an outgoing flight. For an outbound flight, waiting times at security checkpoints are integrated (described in more detail later).

Arrival at BER

When arriving at BER, data such as information on the terminal, baggage carousel, gate and exit are directly visible.

All the necessary information on the operating airline is immediately displayed for the displayed flight. Accordingly, information on check-in facilities, baggage information and lounges, but also contact with the airline is available. In future, travellers who are picked up can immediately share the data with others so that relatives, friends or business partners are also up to date and can pick them up on time, for example. In future, tailored services will be located in the lower part of the page. In the conception, special care was taken to ensure that only those shops, restaurants & cafés are displayed that are accessible to the users due to the security areas. These expansion stages have already been designed and are currently being implemented and will soon be integrated. Thus, the flight details page provides the central point of contact during and before the flight and also links to all other necessary pages and information that should be accessible during the flight.

Bookmark flight

We have designed the “flight remembering” function so that passengers as well as people picking up passengers and other visitors can always stay up to date with the latest status reports on one or more flights. Users can remember the flights that are relevant to them at any time and have them pinned globally on the website under the top navigation. These flights are thus always in view and can be called up quickly. Changes to the flight status of these flights are always displayed in the visible area. Once activated, the memorised flight detail page and corresponding status messages can be called up at any time. If desired, users are not only informed about changes while using the web application, but also have the option of being informed about changes, such as gate changes, delays and much more, via various channels and can thus react to changes at an early stage.

We have been able to identify several flight statuses that have a direct impact on the notices and data on the website:

These states of the flight affect the data displayed in the flight search (typeahead), on the flight list, the flight details page and the bookmarked, pinned flight details, including the notifications that reach the users. The data is updated automatically and so are the changes, so that users can keep an eye on the flight status at all times.

Digital airport information

The “First Aid” button quickly and easily solves problems that may arise during a flight: from lost luggage or forgotten items in the flyer, opening times, transport connections to flight irregularities and specific luggage regulations, direct contact is of course also possible in addition to DeepL access to specific problem issues. This floating action button can be reached quickly and easily from anywhere – thus also in “emergencies” and should be ready to help travellers without a long search.

Waiting times at the security checkpoints

A particularly important point in the passenger’s itinerary is usually the security checks. This is where effective dynamic passenger control is very helpful. To ensure that passengers are distributed sensibly among the available checkpoints, there is a system that displays an estimate of the expected (absolute or relative) waiting times at the respective security checkpoints. Both online on the website and on digital boards at the airport, travellers can identify and use the security check that saves them the most time.

Baggage information

In order for users to find all baggage information, contact options and information about the lounges in the future, we will make them available bundled by airline. Directly accessible from the flight details page, and otherwise of course via the menu, users will soon not have to switch to the airline websites or apps themselves, but will find the most necessary information directly on the page. This is particularly helpful at check-in, but also in an emergency if a piece of luggage has been damaged or lost, or items have been forgotten on the plane. This functionality is still under development.

Cafés, Shops und Services

On the overview page, users can immediately see in which terminal and on which level the services, cafés and shops are located and, of course, whether they are in the security area or outside. Since the offer is very extensive, an intuitive filter quickly narrows down the selection. Here, too, security areas, terminals and routes as well as opening hours play a major role. In future, users will therefore be shown offers matching their “bookmarked” flight and the corresponding distance, for example, and will be navigated directly via their device.

CONCLUSION

THE REVIEW

Due to the complex contexts and structures at the airport, but also due to the different needs of the users, it was a challenging and very exciting project. Thanks to the close exchange and excellent cooperation, we were able to design efficient and sustainable services that offer travellers orientation and safety, but also optimally support visitors in their endeavours. We continue to review all interactions with the web platform for their efficiency and impact in order to create an intuitive digital ecosystem that provides users with a consistent user experience through functional and perceptible patterns. By means of various passenger surveys and UX tests, we can continue to collect extensive data that allow us to design and develop in a well-founded and future-proof manner. GORE-TEX’s innovative technologies offer outdoor sports enthusiasts the perfect protection against wet, wind and hypothermia.

Challenge

The waterproof and at the same time breathable GORE-TEX functional textiles were not only to gain awareness in the B2B sector, but this time also in the B2C sector, but above all to be understood. GORE-TEX’s technologies, many years of expertise, elaborate testing conditions and unique testing facilities should be at the forefront.

Goal

Behind every product are very specific technological developments. Understanding this and finding the right clothes for oneself was the focus of the development of the new platform.

Methods and approach

KfW Stories - an online magazine about people and countries of the world that have almost been forgotten.

Where we started

KfW promotes and supports projects worldwide – always keeping a close eye on social aspects. From national parks in Africa, to solar plants in Mexico and start-ups in Germany, to small farmers in Vietnam. KfW not only provides the financial resources, but also advises, helps with implementation and supervises these projects.

Challenge

Hardly anyone knows that KfW sets up such projects. As the world’s largest national promotional bank, the stories behind its products have always been unknown.
There was no bundling of editorial content reporting on KfW’s projects worldwide. The old CMS did not allow for contemporary integration or even staging of multimedia content. APIs were only partially available. The values and range of KfW’s funding options were not sufficiently communicated. Content curation accompanying the project was expandable.

Mission

Improve KfW’s likeability and image, increase relevance and awareness while communicating KfW’s values, reaching multipliers and decision-makers.

Methods and approach

Target group interviews, the creation of personae and the close exchange with KfW’s editorial team helped us to better understand the target groups. The joint development of the target matrix and vision with the client was a decision-making aid for us at every stage of the platform development. They formed a decision-making aid of a good and powerful cooperation.
An extensive content audit followed by content strategy and planning paved the way for a solid content structure. Thus, we developed a user-friendly navigation concept that has passed the UX tests to date. The creation of sitemaps, wireframes, the specification of page and module types, as well as the development of prototypes helped us to design a perfect platform for KfW’s stories.
We were able to give concrete measures for content production and recommendations for content management. Editorial guidelines helped to ensure that CI, modules and page types were always used in a targeted manner, even in the editorial process.

Results

A digital platform that tells the unique stories behind KfW – engaging, entertaining, always up-to-date, with films, reports, interviews and statements from the very people who are making a difference in the world. Stories from all over the world about inventors, builders, about people in the light and people in the shade.

relaunch of the career website for the online retailer OTTO to recruit employees in the areas of IT, e-commerce and online marketing.

Challenge

OTTO’s appeal among the mentioned specialist areas was definitely low. In a highly courted market, where Zalando, Google, Apple definitely seem more attractive, the aim was to make the competence in the technology sector clear and to reach the target group with specialist content and lectures. A new service-oriented career website should address the target group and guide them through the application process in the best possible way.

Solution

The task was to develop an intuitive job board. Target group-specific entry points, the possibility to view the status of the application process at any time, direct contact persons and one-click applications prove that OTTO’s RED4 team can do digital. Pictures, interviews and statements of the employees additionally ensure that Otto was able to position itself as an authentic employer and pioneer in online retail.

Methods and approach

Extensive research on the user behaviour of applicants and job seekers. Elaborate on the use of target group entry points to better tailor services and information to target groups.
Creation and elaboration of personae, sitemap, user stories, wireframes, workshops, prototypes, testing, fine specification for development.

Escape the urban jungle. Jump straight into nature. Google Maps sends all city dwellers into the nature with the urban escape plan. The user can be located via the website and is immediately shown the best places – always close by and usually secret.

Challenge

Google Maps is often perceived as a pure online map service. A platform where you usually quickly look up a place, a route or perhaps take a look at the surroundings of your next home via Street View. Google Maps can be more than that, especially when it comes to creating time-outs in everyday life. After all, who hasn’t experienced it: a stressful day at the office, a head full of things to do and the weekend still nowhere in sight?

Solution

Bloggers and photographers from all over Germany have told us their favourite places in nature. The small parks at the back of the pond or the best sunset view in town. It’s all there. A clearing in the forest to escape from everyday life or a small green spot in the middle of the city houses. The green locations finally get the city dwellers out of the grey.
To get into the green as quickly as possible and discover the best spots, the website g.co/insgruene was developed. The user can simply be located or enter their location directly and immediately see several locations in the countryside. He/she can swipe left and right between the spots. Once the user has decided on a spot, the quickest route via Google Maps takes him or her from the spot out into nature. A total of 180 locations can be discovered. Photographed, located, described by the discoverers and hashtagged #insgruene, these spots have become permanent Google Pins – to capture Germany’s most beautiful getaway spots in the future.

Results

Blogs and newspapers all over Germany picked up on the initiative and encouraged their readers to escape to the countryside. From large national media to small local newspapers and city news, journalists and readers began sharing their favourite tips and secret green stashes. The initiative increased website traffic by 1.3 million visits, with each user spending an average of 59 seconds on the platform.
